Mallinder Counselling
Step 1 –
Initial
Consultation

Purpose and safety firsty:
The process begins with an initial consultation, conducted in my office. This session aims to understand your needs and explain how walk and talk therapy works. It is also when we will conduct a preliminary risk assessment to ensure your safety and suitability for this way of working.
Step 4 – Beginning Sessions
Working together in nature:
Sessions take place outdoors in agreed locations. We will walk at a pace that feels comfortable for you, allowing space for conversation, reflection, and pauses where needed.
Being side-by-side rather than face-to-face can feel less intense, and many people find that the natural environment supports a sense of ease and openness.
Step 2 – Assessment & Planning
Ensuring suitability:
If we decide to move forward, we will explore any relevant health considerations, personal circumstances, and preferences for outdoor work. This includes discussing appropriate locations, pace, and any factors that may impact your safety or comfort.
We will also consider potential risks and how these can be managed, ensuring that sessions are tailored to your individual needs.
Step 5 –
Ongoing
Review
Adapting to your needs:
We will regularly review how this way of working feels for you. This includes considering factors such as weather, environment, and your overall experience.
If needed, sessions can be adapted, rescheduled, or moved indoors to ensure your wellbeing remains the priority.

Step 3 – Agreement & Boundaries
Clarity and shared understanding:
Before beginning walk and talk sessions, we will agree how we will work together outdoors. This includes practical considerations such as confidentiality in public spaces, what to do if we encounter others, and how we respond to unexpected situations.
We will also agree on boundaries, responsibilities, and what to do in the event of an emergency.
Step 6 –
Ending
Therapy
Bringing the work to a close:
When you feel ready, we will plan an ending to your sessions. This allows time to reflect on your progress and bring the work to a thoughtful and supported conclusion.
